If you’d like me to create a custom preserved piece for you, you’ll need to dry your bouquet first. Don’t worry — it’s easier than you think! I’ve put together a simple guide to help you preserve your flowers at home so they’re ready to be transformed into a timeless heirloom.
Step-by-Step Guide to Drying Your Wedding Bouquet
1. Know your flowers
Not every flower dries the same. Roses, hydrangeas, coneflowers, celosia, amaranth, statice, lavender, strawflowers, baby’s breath, and greenery usually do very well in a hanging environment.
*Please note that each flower will change texture and color as it dries.*
2. Choose the right blooms
Once you’ve chosen the flowers you would to hang, start by removing any browning petals and cut stems to your desired length (about 6–8 inches).
3. Bundle them up
Using twine or a rubber band, tie each type of flower into small bunches — not too tight, since stems will shrink as they dry. Try to keep like with like (roses with roses, greenery with greenery, etc). Then they dry at the same pace and reduce the likelihood of mold.
4. Hang them up
Place your bundles in a cool, dark, and dry space (like a closet). Good airflow is key.
*Make sure to avoid bathrooms. They contain too much moisture and are a surefire way to ruin your flowers.*
5. Patience (it's a virtue)
Drying takes 4-8 weeks depending on flower type and environment.
The bigger the flower, the longer it takes to dry.
For example, roses will take longer to dry than baby’s breath. They contain more moisture and are considerably larger.
6. Proper storage
Once your flowers are dry, keep them in a sturdy box until you’re ready to either use them in your project or bring them to me for the final preservation. This protects them from dust and breakage.
